This class covers bystander CPR for adults, children and infants, proper use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) on individuals in cardiac arrest, proper treatment for patients with obstructed airways (choking) and other basic first aid techniques. The class is held at the Crown/Merrill Apartments Community Room, starting promptly at 9 AM and ending around noon. Training is open to both campus affiliates and members of the general public who are interested in learning these important lifesaving procedures. Upon registering, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with more details and and payment instructions.
Training is conducted using the bystander CPR/AED curriculum developed by the Emergency Medical Services Integration Authority (EMSIA) of Santa Cruz County. If you are taking this training for job or licensing requirements, we recommend that you check with your employer or licensing agency prior to registering to determine if they will accept this certification. We are not able to answer questions about whether or not this class is acceptable for specific purposes. Course curriculum is available on our website at http://fire.ucsc.edu/public-education/cpr. Also, please note that the Fire Department does not offer any professional rescuer-level training such as is required for lifeguards, medical professionals, etc. If you need this level of training, please contact the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association or another training provider.
Upon successful completion of the class, you will receive a certification card valid for two years from the Emergency Medical Services Integration Authority of Santa Cruz County and approved by the Santa Cruz County EMS Agency.
The cost of the class is $15 payable by cash, check or recharge. We cannot accept credit card payments. Further payment instructions will be provided in the confirmation e-mail you will receive upon registering.
Payment must be received by the Fire Department no later than 7 days prior to the class date. After that time, your registration will be cancelled unless you contact us to make other arrangements. If you are registering for a class after the 7 day deadline, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange your payment.
Class Size and Waiting List
Class size is limited to 20 participants and the class will show as full once that limit is reached. Classes are offered monthly, so please check other dates if your preferred date is not available. If you wish to be placed on the waiting list for a class, please e-mail email@example.com with your name, preferred class date(s) and a daytime phone number. You may be notified of openings up to the day prior to the class.
If you need to cancel your registration for a class, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. You can register for another class (if available) through the Events Manager website. We can either apply your class fee to a new class or offer a refund. Due to the high demand for these classes and the fact that we usually have a waiting list, please provide as much advance notice as possible so that we can open your space to another person.
The Fire Department makes every effort to avoid cancelling classes, but reserves the right to do so for operational and emergency reasons if necessary. In the event that we are forced to cancel a class, we will contact you as soon as possible and make arrangements to place you in the next possible class.
