Individuals working in laboratories involving research with infectious agents, recombinant DNA, human cell lines, and/or human blood or tissues are encouraged to register for this course.

 

This course has recently been divided into two components:

1.      The first 60 minutes will encompass key elements of biosafety:

·        Regulatory Requirements

·        Safe Work Practices

·        Biosafety Cabinet use

·        Biohazardous/Medical waste/sharps handling and disposal

·        Biohazardous spill response procedures

·        Incident response procedures

2.      The last 20 minutes will cover required elements of the Cal-OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standard.

·        Hazard Identification and Definitions

·        Compliance to the Regulation

·        Exposure Control Plan

·        Hepatitis B Vaccine

·        Universal Precautions

 

All attendees should arrive at the beginning of the class.  Those who do not need the Cal/OSHA required annual Bloodborne Pathogens training may leave after the first hour.  Any person that may come into contact with human blood, blood products, tissues, cells or other potentially infected material fall under the Cal/OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.
